Running api on unix does not work:
 ./api6.2 -dv

Here you can see some but not all of the required dll's are loaded:

Loading vst.DLL.
Loading vst.DLL succeeded.
Loading location.DLL.
Loading location.DLL failed, possible problem with PATH.
init_apis() failed: API failed to open



Workaround
Create a link on OS

Test Procedure
Run the above command on a system where vertex is installed, and see that no error is given
