Customized Scan

Customized scans can entirely be configured by the user. A customized scan is a combination of questions executed across potentially different connections. It results finally in a viewable output of all the questions selected by the user. The following are the steps involved in creating and executing a customized scan.

Note: The customized scans wizard is an advanced utility. Not every single detail aspect is described. Experiment with the different features to gain confidence in it's use. The steps below intend to give you a general impression of the feature.

Steps to define and execute a customized scan

Step 1: If not already done, create one or more connections.

Step 2: Use an existing folder or optionally create a new folder in the folder list, e.g. with name "CustomizedScans". Right click the folder and use the pop-up menu to add a customized scan:

Step 3: A customized scan wizard pops up through which the customized scan can be configured. Provide a name for your customized scan and click "Next" to proceed.

Step 4: The second GUI window of the wizard allows you to add records to the customized scan. Refer to the table for a description of the form fields. Fill out the form.

  Field Description
Connection The connection value to be entered depends on the question you want to add (see the next field)
Question After having chosen a connection, a dropdown list sums up the possible questions to choose
Repetition Factor If the question collects data which is dynamic (i.e. changing in time), you may want to have the question executed more than once. Normally the default value of 1 is recommended
Repetition Interval Enter the time interval (in seconds) between each execution. The default value is 1. A non-default value only has relevance if the repetition factor is greater than 1
Start Time Enter the start time for the question. The default is "now" (which corresponds to the moment you start the customized scan). To select a non-default value, the button to the right of the field leads you to the date time chooser.
End Time Enter the maximum allowed end time for the question. This has relevance for questions with a potentially high execution time. If the question takes longer than the allowed end time, it is killed automatically. The default value depends on the question. To select a non-default value, the button to the right of the field leads you to the date time chooser.

Step 5: Click "Save" to save the entry to the customized scan.

Step 6: Adding a next question can be accomplished by using the "+" button. After having configured several queries according to your requirements, press "Save" followed by "Next" to proceed.

Step 6: An overview of your customized scan is displayed. Press "Back" to modify your configuration or press "Finish" to execute the customized scan. If you click "Finish" a popup window appears:

Step 7: A customized scan node is added to the folder list tree (in the folder of step 2). By double clicking on this tree node, you can access its progress information.

Step 8: The progress window on completion of the execution allows you to display or delete the output of the customized scan.

Step 9: On clicking "Display", a navigable report is displayed with the results of your customized scan. The output per question is similar to the output as described for individual questions.

Step 10: After having reviewed the results, exit the output window. Also leave the customized scans progress window (the output is then deleted automatically, to save space on the server). At a later stage you will be able to rerun the customized scan by double-clicking it's entry in the folder list. This is possible only if the output of a previous scan has been deleted. Popup messages and buttons (which are activated or deactivated, depending on the history) should guide you.
