Connections are the smallest unit of execution made possible through the OnePoint Diagnostics Portal. A connection can be viewed as a pipe into the target software layer. The OnePoint Diagnostics Portal is capable of supporting connections across different software layers (the OS layer, the database layer, and the Baan application layer). The architecture is such that any future software layers can also be supported via the same mechanism.
In order to use OnePoint Diagnostics in an optimal way, you must create a connection to at least one of each of the three software layers: Baan application, Database, and OS (see also mandatory connections).
A connection can be created for the local server (on which OnePoint Diagnostics has been installed) or (optionally) for remote servers. A wizard can be used, and a manual procedure is available as well.

Follow the steps as directed by the wizard. Please note that parameters suggested by the wizard must be checked manually (refer to the connection types page for details about each parameter), and for some connection types a password needs to be entered.

On initiating the "Add/Connection/New..." menu, you activate the connection wizard that helps you to create connections.

A connection is created by choosing the type and (sometimes) the template, followed by entering a personal name for the connection. The type and template define a connection to a particular software layer and the personal name that you give is stored for your reference in your configurable tree. Press "Next>" to configure the connection with your settings.

Correct values must be entered in the form fields. Red labels indicate mandatory fields, black labels indicate non-mandatory fields. Refer to the connection types page for details about each parameter. After filling out the form, press the "Test" button to validate the entered settings.
If the test doesn't perform successfully, an error is reported. Either some value is to be corrected/entered or some problem is to be resolved. A potential error cause is that the involved RDBMS system (such as Oracle 8 in the connection above) might not be running.
In specific situations it may be necessary to enter advanced connection parameters by means of the "Advanced" button. In many cases, the connection can be used without entering advanced values. Refer to the connection types page for details about advanced parameters.
When the test completes successfully, the "OK" button can be used and the connection is created and added to the tree. When the "OK" button is selected immediately (i.e., without performing a test first), implicitly a test is performed and processing continues as if the "Test" button was pressed.
Existing connections are those that are present on the server but are missing from the tree. They can be retrieved as follows:
On clicking this menu option, the wizard is designed to display all the existing connections that are not visible in the tree (if all connections are already visible in the tree you will be informed).
Selecting a connection from the list and pressing "Next", brings you to the connection wizard. Parameter values can be changed (when necessary) which enables the "Test" procedure as outlined above.
